I have a fondness for icebergs. They’re just water, but those great white juggernauts are the stuff of legend among mariners; not to mention welcome havens for a range of creatures spanning from pinniped to polar bears.
Needless to say, I was instantly taken by these images by San Francisco photographer Alex Cornell. During a trip to Antarctica in December 2014, Cornell encountered an iceberg that had turned over, exposing a rich, polished deep blue underside.
In time, this iceberg will assume the typical weathered white appearance of its neighbors, but thanks to Alex, we at least have a momentary glimpse of what is typically concealed well below the surface. Spectacular.
